In 1986, a project was quietly launched by the Motorola Computer Group to develop a new generation of VMEbus single board computer that would fully exploit the capabilities of leading-edge ASIC technology. The challenge given to the design team was straightforward – incorporate as many functions as possible onto a single VMEbus board. The resulting VMEbus single board computer (fondly named MVME147) took 2 years to develop. When he was introduced to the world in 1988 he left an indelible mark on the industry that spawned him, and is still selling well after 10 years on the market. On this, his 10th anniversary, we have invited MVME147 to tell his story. What follows is an account of what he has seen over the last 10 years, as well as an account of his family tree, and his expectations for the future.

In this article Greg explains why, and then shows how to architect a VMEbus system that can handle voice, video, and other types of telecommunication data streams.
